Prepare for the National Benchmark Test (NBT)
Most universities in South Africa are now requiring Matric students to submit National Benchmark Test Program (NBTP) results as part of their application requirements. The NBT is an assessment test used for first-year applicants to higher education institutions. The NBTs are designed to measure a writer’s ability to transfer understanding of academic literacy (language skills), quantitative literacy (numerical skills) and Mathematics to the demands of higher education coursework.
The NBTs are written between May of one year and February of the following year. With very limited NBT preparation available for students, as well as no past papers, there is very little support for students intending to write the NBTs and therefore progress onto universities and colleges.
NBT MAT
PREPARATION FOR THE NBT MATHEMATICS TEST
Recognising the importance of passing the NBTs, Learnalot, together with Professor Michael Glencross have developed an online NBT MAT course, specifically focused on helping students achieve the necessary scores required for university acceptance.
This course is designed to help students answer non-routine problems in multiple-choice format in the following broad mathematical topics:
- Problem-solving and modelling
- Basic trigonometry
- Spatial perception (angles, symmetries, measurements, etc.)
- Data handling and probability.
- Competent use of logical skills.
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
4 Hours On-Demand Videos
4 Topic Tests with Solutions
1 Composite Test with Solutions
Access by Internet on any Computer, Tablet or Smartphone
The Learnalot online NBT MAT course is designed to be a flexible course, enabling students to work through the course whenever they have available time. Learnalot is very conscious that students are still completing their Gr 12 schooling in addition to preparing for the NBTs, adding additional pressure to the student.
Sample Lessons
The NBT Mathematics test (NBT MAT) consists of 60 multiple-choice questions to be completed within three hours. Although the questions are embedded in the CAPS syllabus, they are designed to measure the preparedness of learners for Higher Education. To this end, the questions emphasise higher-order skills that require the application of concepts in a variety of contexts. The overall emphasis in the test questions is on a deep understanding of mathematics and knowing what reasoning is appropriate in a given context.
NBT MAT - preparation for the NBT Mathematics Test
In this online course will learn about:- Special use of the mathematical language related to multiple-choice questions
- How to approach multiple-choice questions

- Four specific syllabus topics, namely:
- Algebra
- Trigonometry
- Geometry
- Statistics
